Weekly Update Post 01 - Hines Trifecta

Just got back from business travel, and decided to start a Weekly Update post on this blog. So the intent is to have some semblance of involvement on a weekly basis. I imagine it'll be Friday of every week, since in the Fall, my world revolves around the Dawgs' Saturday matchup. I may post additionally during the week, but you can always count on Friday.

Anyway, just got back from the D.C. area. Went to the White House on Tuesday. That's right, the one where W lives. They were having a party. I almost froze my scoobs off waiting outside. That freakin' cold weather made me wonder how Hines Ward could possibly spend as much time as he has in Pittsburg, which is way colder than D.C., Rex, GA or Athens. And to consistently play as well as he has these past 8 years there. It seems like yesterday when he came close to the trifecta, hereinafter we will refer to it as the Hines Trifecta. I realize it's an "almost", which only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes, but it's still amazing. To amass 1,063 yards rushing, 1,965 yards receiving, and the "almost" - 918 yards passing - in a career. You might see a quarterback rush for over 1,000 and pass for over 1,000 or you might see a running back rush for over 1,000 and recieve for over 1,000, but you never see a player that can do all three. And to top that off, he had 842 return yards. Ward was, and still is, amazing to watch - and he's always smiling.

Last time I was in Pittsburg, my limo driver said Ward, and Alabama product Deshea Townsend, have a radio talk show there. Not sure if it's true, but if it is, I'd love to get some feed back on it.

Richt Should Have More SEC Championships

The Dawgs may not have gotten every good Georgia high school player over the years, but man did we have some talented dudes even in the pre-Richt era. Many of whom are still in the NFL.

Just imagine if Richt and company had coached these guys. At least they're gonna up his salary. He'll be makin' more money than a show-dog could jump over.

Richt vs. Spurrier - Coach of the Year

What's the deal with these conflicting reports? Is Spurrier the SEC Coach of the Year, or is Richt?

I know, the AP voted Spurrier as SEC Coach of the Year, and the SEC Coaches voted Richt as SEC Coach of the Year.

Who cares about the AP anyway, they can't report on the War without it being completely biased and negative, why should we expect any better with their sports coverage? That's why they got kicked out of the BCS voting.

I realize Bulldog Nation should be thankful for Spurrier beating the Gators, but I still can't stand him. He better pray to the God of skinny punks that the chicken curse doesn't pick up next year, or Georgia will go over there and shove a football

... you Tommy Boy fans know the rest.

The Streak - Don't Look Ethel!

The Streak - Not Ray Stevens, and Not Will Ferrel through the "quad" - but win/loss records in head-to-head college football match-ups. I’ve waited to post this for quite a while – since the Georgia vs. Florida game, actually. So here it goes…

Whether a team wins or loses a game, the fans, players, sports writers, and sports commentators enjoy identifying the head-to-head streak that favors their team or their point of view, regardless of whether it makes any sense. This happened a great deal before, during, and after the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (WLOCP) this year. The mantra was something like this:

“Georgia comes into this game being dominated by Florida. Florida has won 14 out of the last 16 contests.”
Had Florida lost this year's contest, they would still be touting a 14 out of 17 record. Now I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that there is no way to spin the record against Florida in favor of the Dawgs. Well you are not completely correct in that way of thinking. Let me explain.

What logical factors should be considered when presenting the streak? It first depends upon the subject of the conversation. Here’s my opinion:

  • When discussing an individual, the streak must be tied to that individual’s involvent with the school. If you are discussing the coach for either team, tie it to that coach’s tenure. If the coach has been there for 4 years, then the record is based on his 4 years. If you are discussing a player, same thing.
  • When discussing the team or school as a whole, then there are several options.
  • Multiples of 5. As in, the last 5 meetings, or the last 10 meetings, etc.

  • Overall record. As in, Georgia has an advantage over Tech with an overall record of 57-36-5.

  • Number of games since the last win or loss. As in, Georgia has won the last 12 meetings against Georgia Tech. [think vacate]
  • Home game winning or losing streaks.
  • Conference winning or losing streaks.

Which brings me back to this year’s Georgia vs. Florida mantra. Mark Richt has lost 4 out of the last 5 meetings against Florida. Not good but it counts as a streak. Florida coach Urban Myth has won his only contest against the Bulldogs. Again, not good, but it counts. The Dawgs have an overall record against the Gators of 46-36-2. Better, and it counts. Even the Evil Genius couldn't flip that record.

Check out Georgia's streaks here. Also note that these streaks meet the criteria above in head-to-head matchups. I purposely did not discuss unbeaten streaks involving multiple teams.
